It's cherry picking time on ABC's World News. On Tuesday, former Clinton strategist, George Stephanopoulos, passed over damaging ABC News/ Washington Post survey results showing the public's growing disdain over President Obama's handling of the gulf oil spill disaster down from 49 to 44 percent.
Stephanopoulos passed over multiple oil spill stories and additional findings from the same poll that were unfavorable toward the President and his policies.

TREA Washington Update for June 11, 2010
Congress has returned to Washington and has started to work once again on numerous issues (mostly the oil spill in the Gulf). One thing they have not moved forward on is the "Doc Fix D-Day" (please see below).
On Sunday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Navy Admiral Mike Mullins travelled to Bedford, Virginia to remember the 66th Anniversary of D-Day. Bedford, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, suffered the greatest loss per capita of any town in America on D-Day. The town of 3200 people lost 19 men from A Company 116th Infantry. They had all enlisted together in the National Guard. The Admiral said that the "Bedford Boys" represented America's best ideals saying: "Ordinary people who did extraordinary things: Fighting for something greater than themselves; fighting for each other; fighting for us." He then said that those who are deployed today are the same: "Young people who once again willingly put their lives, their dreams, their families on the line to protect ours
Shake-Up at Arlington National Cemetery-Yesterday the Army Secretary John McHugh ordered a series of reforms at Arlington National Cemetery including appointing a new Director of Operations for the cemetery, a dramatic reprimand of the present and retiring Superintendent of Arlington National Cemetery and placing the Deputy Superintendent on administrative leave while disciplinary review is pending. This was in response to a report by the Army Inspector General which found that the cemetery's management system was "dysfunctional" and chaotic. It found more than 100 unmarked graves, mismarked graves, as well as 117 graves that are not recorded on cemetery maps and at least 4 improperly emptied burial urns. The study was ordered after families complained about how the cemetery was managed. There were 2 mismarked graves (now corrected) graves in Section 60 where Iraq and Afghanistan's war dead are generally buried. The other cases are from much older graves. (even possibly back to the Civil War)
The records are not computerizes and are still kept with a paper card system. Secretary McHugh named Kathryn Condon, a longtime civilian Army executive to a new post of Executive Director of the new Army National Cemeteries Program. A call center has been set up, starting today, to answer questions concerning burials at Arlington. It is 703-607-8199 and will be operating from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m
Please note Arlington National Cemetery is run by the Army not the Department of Veterans' Affairs. This has nothing to do with the 131 National Cemeteries maintained by the VA.

2) "Doc Fix" Frozen With "Extender Bill"-Everyone was assured that the Senate would quickly pick up the Extender Bill as soon as they returned from the Memorial Day recess and reach a solution of some length. Well that did not happen. It is part of a much larger "Extender Bill" HR4213 that is frozen in the Senate. The quickest the Senate could vote on it is Tuesday (and there is no real reason to think they will.) Since the Senate has already made proposed changes to the bill passed by the House and is sure to make more before it is passed the bill would have to go back to the House of Representatives for their consideration. So it is looking very unlikely that the problem will be solved before the 21% cut in payments for physicians treating Medicare patients goes into effect. It actually went into effect on June 1, but the Executive Branch has been holding back payments hoping a new fix would be completed. Now we may see how the implementation of such a dramatic cut will affect medical practice for Medicare and TFL patients. Hopefully, the Senate will clench their teeth and move on the bill. But with more and more people worried about the growing deficit working on $170 billion bill full of tax changes and benefit extensions is politically dangerous. Democrats as well as Republicans are refusing to support the bill without more and more changes-so it is not clear what will happen
3) TREA Attends an Aging/Veterans Community Meeting-This week The Retired Enlisted Association, represented by Deirdre Holleman, Larry Madison, and Michael Saunders, attended a discussion intended to bring the veterans organizations and organizations concerned with issues for the aging together to focus on healthy living and economic security for seniors.
The National Council on Aging promoted two websites, http://www.benefitscheckup.org and http://patienteducation.stanford.edu/internet/ which seek to help seniors manage their money and their health more easily.
www.benefitscheckup.org is intended to help seniors find local, state and federal benefits to which they are entitled, and it includes veteran's benefits. Simply fill out the questionnaire, and make sure to have information such as your zip code, monthly income and household wealth handy
Chronic Disease Self Management is a six week, two hour workshop that is peer-led, was developed at Stanford University and has recently gotten funding to go nationwide. The National Association of Nutrition and Aging (http://www.nanasp.org/) also spoke at the meeting. Elder abuse was one of the main topics; NANASP revealed that due to a variety of factors it is underreported and thus is an issue that policy leaders have failed to engage strongly on.
There is a bill, sponsored by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), the Elder Justice Act of 2009, that has been referred to the Finance Committee and has 16 cosponsor. S. 795 would amend the Social Security Act to enhance the security of the Nation by ensuring adequate public-private infrastructure and to resolve to prevent, detect, treat, intervene in, and prosecute elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

4) Is America Falling Behind in the Race to Find Medical Cures?-The Council for American Medical Innovation, chaired by former Majority and Minority Leader Dick Gephardt (D-MO) held a press conference on June 10, 2010 to announce the release of a study done by Battelle, an international science and technology enterprise that explores emerging areas of science, develops and commercializes technology, and manages laboratories for customers.
The study pointed out troubling statistics relating to America's worldwide leadership in medical innovation, such as lagging scores on mathematics and science tests for high school students, the difficulties in turning new research into lifesaving medicine, and the lack of entrepreneurship/ initial public offerings in the medical technology field since the 2008 financial crisis.
Titled, "Gone Tomorrow? A Call to Promote Medical Innovation, Create Jobs, and Find Cures in America," called for several policy prescriptions that should help America bring lifesaving medical research to the patients that need it:
White House-level leadership, in the form of a federal office that leads collaborative efforts . "Coordinating efforts at the highest levels of government is essential to ensuring near-term progress," said Mr. Gephardt.
Forming public-private partnerships: since most research is initially conducted with government funding, yet most products are produced by private companies, it is important to work together to make sure that all of the discoveries that we are making, especially in our high-powered public research universities, are able to be turned into life-saving medicine for the patients that need it.
If we invest more in research and development and manufacturing, we will create more well-paying jobs in the short run to help the U.S. remain at the front of the pack internationally; one way to do this is to raise and renew the federal research and development tax credit.

5) National Security Personnel System Disappearing Even More Quickly Than Expected-For all of you who retired from the Military and then became civilian employees of DoD the changes are coming quickly. 226,000 DoD civilian employees are quickly being moved out of the controversial NSPS and most are being moved back into the General Schedule (GS) for federal civil servants. The Director of the Transition Office, John H. James Jr. testified before the Senate on Wednesday that 75% of the affected employees will be moved back to the old system by September. This is much faster than the January 2012 deadline created when Congress repealed the Bush administration initiative last year.
"Of the 53,057 employees that have been transitioned through the pay period that began on May 23, 2010, approximately 71 percent received a pay increase, with the average salary 'bump' of $1,363 per year; and 8 percent remained at their same rate of pay because their salary matched a step within their new GS grade," James said.
21% of the employees already moved , are on pay retention. If that ratio holds, more than 47,000 workers would get 50 percent of salary increases available to other employees until their GS salary schedule matches their pay.
James explained:"In gradual increments, the pay schedule is catching up to the employee's salary. When it does pay retention ends, and the employee will begin to receive the full government pay increase

As of 12:00 PM CST, possible battle hardened troops or National Guard, in full battle gear and body armor with have been seen moving into the area. Fully armored HUMVEES with 50 Cal active gun turrets are reportedly arriving on scene as well. All troops and vehicles are in woodland patterns.
Black trucks with red letters displaying “Disaster Relief Team” have also arrived. FEMA contractors and mobile facilities are present. The Crisis Management Corp. is reportedly present as well.
Our reporters see no visible sign that the troops are National Guard at this time. They reported the troops looked “battle hardened”.

It seems that our representatives in Washington want Americans to know that, instead of studying the ideas of the Founding Fathers on the appropriate way governments should treat people, the DC ignoramuses have taken on the wisdom of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. And, ironically, many people in the Tea Party movement who have been supporting Bush war policies may be the ones regretting such support.
The most recent examples of our leaders rushing to violate our liberty in the name of fighting terrorism or other government-caused problems include Senator Joe Lieberman's legislation to remove citizenship from suspected terrorists or terrorism abettors, and a proposal from Sen. Lindsay Graham and Sen. Charles Schumer to force all Americans to have a biometric ID card that would include embedded information such as fingerprints, etc. Because of the short-sightedness that has been common in Washington for over a century, the Founders' belief in the Presumption of Innocence and Due Process now seems to be an anachronism.
This past decade's war on terrorism has become an unwitting invitation for the government's camel to completely barge in the tent, as the policies that the Bush Administration put in place can be used by subsequent administrations for dubious purposes, the prevention of which is why the American Founders wrote the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
The Bush war policies have given President Obama too much unchecked power. This includes a perversion of the rule of law that is supposed to restrict the State from curtailing individual rights. Consequently, the artificial notion of "battlefield rules," in which rights may be curtailed by agents of the State in the name of war, combined with the globalizing of the war on terrorism, in which the battlefield has extended to include all territories, have disintegrated the concept of national sovereignty as well as erased the protection of individuals from State aggression.
For example, the Bush policies including the Patriot Act, warrantless surveillance, denial of due process, assassinations of suspected terrorists including Americans, extraordinary rendition, and indefinite detention, were short-sighted policies and may in fact be used to suppress opposition to the U.S. government, rather than to prevent actual terrorism.
Most worrisome is that so many people in the government and the media have been referring to the apprehension or execution of "terrorists," when really referring to those our government has accused of engaging in or supporting terrorism, without evidence brought forth. That is troubling because in many cases officials knowingly had apprehended and held totally innocent terrorism suspects, some of whose apprehension and detention werebased on false confessions by others as a result of torture or financial payments.
And Lieberman's proposal to remove citizenship from terrorism suspects would mean an individual's fate would be in the hands of Obama, CIA agents, career bureaucrats, and foreign governments. But should we really trust the judgment of someone as creepy as President Obama? And do we really want CIA agents to have the power to decide who should live or die, without trial?
200 years after the American Founders wrote a Constitution with rules for what the agents of the State may or may not do, Americans have been supporting policies with too much blind faith in the judgment of government and military officials.
Another problem is the false notion that the inalienable rights of the individual only apply to "American citizens." The Declaration of Independence, however, is quite clear. It does not mention "only Americans." Those rights to life and liberty are inherent in all human beings. The rights of each individual to one's own life and liberty are inherent rights, and include the right to be free from the aggression of others and the right to be presumed innocent and left alone. We just have those rights as human beings, and the Declaration of Independence merely recognizes that.
We must be concerned about these war policies, because the history of the past century has consisted of suppression of individual rights by regimes of fascist and Marxist ideologies, to which Obama clearly subscribes. Such regimes would not tolerate a "Tea Party" movement.
It is ironic that ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis, who stands for the Obama agenda of socialist redistribution of wealth and fascist takeovers of entire industries, as well as one intrusion after another into the private lives of all Americans, expressed her irrational concern of her fellow "young, Democratic socialists" being rounded up into "internment camps." Lewis is frightened by the Tea Party movement, people who have been peacefully expressing their legitimate protestations of an out-of-control, overreaching and invasive government - people merely trying to protect themselves from the aggression of the State.
Rational Americans should be much more concerned about federal administration officials such as regulatory czar Cass Sunstein, who proposes to"infiltrate" Internet sites and chat rooms as a means of controlling public opinion, and Solicitor General Elena Kagan who has said that freedom of speech "depends upon a categorical balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs" (i.e. government-approved speech), and who has been supportive of President Obama's ever-expanding executive powers including detaining or assassinating individuals without trial.
Conservatives and Tea Partiers need to be cautious in supporting policies such as detaining indefinitely or assassinating Americans suspected - not convicted, but suspected - of participating in "terrorist" or other criminal activities, in the name of fighting terrorism or any other societal threat, especially when we have public officials such as Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano and her DHS explicitly declaring "right-wing extremists," "anti-government" types, and people opposed to ObamaCare as a threat to national security. Beware of people like Speaker Pelosi and others who have referred to Tea Party protesters as acting seditiously against the government. These officials are literally viewing Tea Partiers and conservatives as the "terrorists."
The Obama Left may use such Bush-imposed policies based on presumption of guilt and without due process to serve their own political agenda, which could result in very negative consequences for members of the Tea Party movement, and all Americans. And if there will be an economic crisis even worse than the Great Depression as some people predict, and if the Obama Administration calls for martial law, then you will see greater abuse of government and police power, especially if law enforcement duties are shared by members of AmeriCorps, ACORN, S.E.I.U. and other pro-Obama unions and flunkies.
The Bush anti-terrorism policies were policies of short-sightedness and expediency that did not take into account their long-term consequential effects on liberty. Given monopolistic control over protecting the country from terrorism, officials do not have a competitive incentive to provide actual quality service of protection. Because of this, decisions are political, rather than practical and moral. Americans need to recognize this, and see how the compulsory nature of having to use this one government-run service is impractical and dangerous. It would be wise to reject the Big Government socialism and internationalism of our current Homeland Security police and military bureaucracy and consider more practical alternatives that don't violate liberty, and that would be accountable to law and to markets rather than to political interests.
Eventually, thanks to the Bush Administration and the Obama extremists, we may discover how a more severe threat to our liberty and our security is not Islamic terrorism, but our own government.
Americans may very well learn the hard way that the Rule of Law is absolute, and applies to all people, private citizens and military personnel, businessmen and public officials, with no exceptions, war or not.

Bizarre: California passes proposition eliminating party primaries
When I heard they were voting on a proposition that would create an "open primary," I thought that meant the standard model - i.e., any voter is free to vote in either primary regardless of party affiliation. I . was drastically wrong.
Despite opposition from party leaders, voters approved Proposition 14 by a 54%-46% margin. The measure would allow voters to pick candidates from any political party during a primary; only the top 2 candidates would advance to a general election, regardless of party.
Supporters of the initiative said it would result in greater voter choice, and that it would lead to more moderate picks for state legislature by bringing independent voters into the primary process. But opponents said the measure would hurt third parties and independent candidates, and that the smaller number of candidates on a general election ballot would end up costing voters a choice.
Follow the legal implications. Basically, so long as the candidates don't declare any formal party affiliation but merely state that they "prefer" one party over another, that's probably enough to make it constitutional.
Otherwise, there's a First Amendment issue in letting people who are unaffiliated with a party pick that party's official nominee, as will happen in a "blanket primary" (which is slightly different from this).
Schwarzenegger's a big fan of the new system, and understandably so: It's aimed at preventing fierce partisans like the nutroots and tea partiers from dominating their respective primary elections and forcing a choice between two ideologues on the public in the general election.
So for instance, under California's new system, in last night's Nevada race a bunch of independents who might not otherwise have voted in the GOP election could have broken hard for Sue Lowden over Angle and put her and Reid on the ballot in November as the two top finishers.
Ace calls this the death of political parties, which is potentially true in deep blue or deep red states where you might end up with no Republican or Democrat on the ballot in the general election.
But even so, I'm intrigued by the possibilities it'll create for strategic voting. To revisit the Nevada example, given that Reid's campaign desperately wanted to face Angle rather than Lowden, would a bunch of his voters have voted for Angle last night on the assumption that Reid would get enough votes anyway to finish in the top two?
And, er, what if they miscalculated? Also, I'm not quite as pessimistic as Ace is about a state's minority party being knocked off the ballot in the general for the simple reason that minority parties will know that they have to unite behind a single candidate before the vote. E.g., in Texas, a bunch of Republican candidates could afford to duke it out but Democrats would have to pick some anointed de facto nominee before the primary and pool their votes behind that person to ensure that they finish in the top two.
In fact, asChris Cillizza notes, depending upon how many ways the Republican vote is split, you could end up with a general election between two Democrats - in Texas. And if you did, that would force the state's Republican base to either try a write-in campaign for some GOPer on election day or to line up behind the more conservative Democrat of the two, which could actually help reduce partisanship a bit by forcing voters of one party to invest in a candidate from across the aisle.
The irony is, unless the parties decide to hold "invisible primaries" beforehand so that the rank-and-file know whom to pool their votes for on primary day, this may hand more power to each party's machine.
If the machine says, "We need to unite behind Sue Lowden," grassroots conservatives might do so simply because they fear being knocked off the ballot in the general if the GOP vote gets split between Lowden and a bunch of others.
And, for a further irony, that might lead parties to make many more Sestak/Romanoff-type job offers in order to clear the field for their candidates of choice. In other words, for a supposed good government measure, there are all sorts of potentially untoward consequences.

This is what is happening in Sweden, the second stage of a lawless and brutal civil war -- brought on by themselves, much as all of Europe has done. What is so terrifying is that America is following their lead in the appeasement of Islamic supremacists.
I am sure that a real attempt to bring the Muslim riots under control will be met by strong condemnation and rebuke by the OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference)-driven UN.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt cautioned that the riots that blighted the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby on Monday and Tuesday needed to be brought quickly under control.

Education Minister Jan Björklund and Integration Minister Nyamko Sabuni on Wednesday visited Rinkeby to take stock of the situation.
Up to 100 youths have rioted for two straight nights in the Stockholm suburb, throwing bricks, setting fires and attacking the local police station, police said Wednesday.
"They set fire to a school building ... They tried to set fire to the police station and other buildings and vehicles, but mostly they have thrown rocks and bricks at police and fire fighters," police spokesperson Mats Eriksson told AFP.
He said no one had so far been injured in the riots which began on Monday in the northern suburb long blighted by high levels of unemployment and home to a large number of first and second generation immigrants.
"The whole thing started when a group of young adults were not permitted to enter a junior high schooldance. They got angry and started throwing rocks through the school windows," Eriksson said.
Up to 100 people went on a rampage, breaking 23 windows at the local police station and setting at least one car ablaze and leaving a school set up as a mentor programme for young people to find their way into the labour market, burned to the ground.
Three people were arrested late Monday, but had since been released, Eriksson said, adding that "I would say things got worse" Tuesday night, when the school and four or five cars were set on fire.
"Fire fighters were there but they couldn't approach the blaze (at the school building, which was basically burned to the ground), because they were under attack," he said.
Eriksson said local police in the western part of Stockholm would receive reinforcements from across the capital to try to calm tensions in Rinkeby.
"This is an extremely serious situation and we must bring it to an end as soon as possible, otherwise it will keep getting worse," he said mirroring Reinfeldt's words, adding the riots were "an attack on both the society as a whole and on the residents in the area."
