The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is seeking ways to "reinvent" journalism, and that's a cause for concern. According to a May 24 draft proposal, the agency thinks government should be at the center of a media overhaul. The bureaucracy sees it as a problem that the Internet has introduced a wealth of information options to consumers, forcing media companies to adapt and experiment to meet changing market needs. FTC's policy staff fears this new reality.
"There are reasons for concern that experimentation may not produce a robust and sustainable business model for commercial journalism," the report states. With no faith that the market will work things out for the better, government thinks it must come to the rescue.
The ideas being batted around to save the industry share a common theme: They are designed to empower bureaucrats, not consumers. For instance, one proposal would, "Allow news organizations to agree jointly on a mechanism to require news aggregators and others to pay for the use of online content, perhaps through the use of copyright licenses."
In other words, government policy would encourage a tax on websites like the Drudge Report, a must-read source for the news links of the day, so that the agency can redistribute the funds collected to various newspapers. Such a tax would hit other news aggregators, such as Digg, Fark and Reddit, which not only gather links, but provide a forum for a lively and entertaining discussion of the issues raised by the stories. Fostering a robust public-policy debate, not saving a particular business model, should be the goal of journalism in the first place.

An Interesting but Little known story of 9/11
This is little-known story from the Pentagon on 09/11/2001:
During a visit with a fellow chaplain, who happened to be assigned to the Pentagon, I had a chance to hear a first-hand account of an incident that happened right after Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. The chaplain told me what happened at a daycare center near where the impact
occurred. This daycare had many children, including infants who were in heavy cribs.
The daycare supervisor, looking at all the children they needed to evacuate, was in a panic over what they could do. There were many children, mostly toddlers, as well as the infants that would need to be taken out with the cribs.
There was no time to try to bundle them into carriers and strollers.
Just then a young Marine came running into the center and asked what they needed. After hearing what the center director was trying to do, he ran back out into the hallway and disappeared. The director thought, 'Well, there we are-on our own.'
About 2 minutes later, that Marine returned with 40 other Marines in tow. Each of them grabbed a crib with a child, and the rest started gathering up toddlers. The director and her staff then helped them take all the children out of the center and down toward the park near the Potomac and the Pentagon.
Once they got about 3/4 of a mile outside the building, the Marines stopped in the park, and then did a fabulous thing - they formed a circle with the
cribs, which were quite sturdy and heavy, like the covered wagons in the Old West. Inside this circle of cribs, they put the toddlers, to keep them from wandering off. Outside this circle were the 40 Marines, forming a perimeter around the children and waiting for instructions. There they remained until the parents could be notified and come get their children..
The chaplain then said, "I don't think any of us saw nor heard of this on any of the news stories of the day. It was an incredible story of our men there. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.
The thought of those Marines and what they did and how fast they reacted; could we expect any less from them? It was one of the most touching stories from the Pentagon.
Remember Ronald Reagan's great compliment: "Most of us wonder if our lives made any difference. Marines don't have that problem."

Today, they are considered utterly unacceptable catastrophes for one reason: a large segment of the culture does not accept that it is legitimate for heavy industry to exist at all and has a particular animus toward industries that generate power-including oil and coal. So they exploit every accident to promote their pre-existing agenda of shutting down all oil exploration. But if we accept that the Industrial Revolution is a good thing-that it has roughly doubled the average lifespan and vastly increased our quality of life-then we accept that the oil industry has to exist and that occasional accidents are just part of the cost of living
With continuous 24-hour headline news coverage of this supposedly "unprecedented" disaster-in fact, it was preceded by the 10-month-long, 140 million-gallon Ixtoc 1 blowout off the gulf coast of Mexico in 1979-Rob Tracinski and Sarah Palin are among a tiny minority of American commentators who have voiced the opinion that industrial development is essential for civilization. Unfortunately Sarah Palin and almost all conservatives agree 100% with conservationism-the pre-New-Left version of environmentalism. They say that energy development as a "dirty" business-a necessary evil-that produces "dirty" messes. Of all of the hundreds of commentaries written about the BP oil spill, I can't recall one single editorial that endorses oil drilling as good.
It is good for oil company stock holders. Good for industrial producers. Good for automobile and truck drivers. Good for people who travel by ship, railroad, or aircraft. Good for people who don't want to be limited to living out their whole lives without ever traveling farther than 100 miles from the village in which they were born.
Oil is good for people who buy products that are shipped to them from out of town. Good for producers who buy parts and supplies that are shipped in from out of town. Good for the specialization of industrial production that is made possible by mass shipment of parts and materials. Good for the geometrical growth of world-wide industrial productivity made possible by the specialization of production and trade.
Oil is good for farmers who use machines to plant and reap and store and dry and ship and process all of the food we eat. Good for farmers who use fertilizer and other agri-chemicals made from oil to boost the productivity of the land. Good for anyone who doesn't enjoy enduring bouts of malnutrition and starvation-and the occasional famine.
Oil is good for people who don't want to endure freezing indoor temperatures in the winter. Good for all producers and end users of lubricants, paints, plastics and other petro-chemical-based products. (Half of the volume of a barrel of crude oil ends up going to make fertilizers and plastics.)
Oil is good for powering all of the ships, trucks, aircraft, helicopters, communications equipment and base electrical systems, and all of the fighting vehicles that the US military use for our national defense. (Ask yourself why it was that when the US Army Air Force decided to destroy the entire nation of Germany in 1944-why was it that they bombed the oil refineries? Why was it that they bombed all modes of transportation to limit shipment between factories of unfinished industrial products?)
Oil drilling isn't a "dirty" business. It isn't a necessary evil. It is good. It is a life-giving good. It is an unqualified good.
The problems of an occasional industrial accident in which fewer than a dozen men are killed fades to nothing in comparison with the great comfort and prosperity and scope of life-including the operation of the mechanized agriculture and industrial production upon which the bare survival of the vast majority of the 6.5 billion human beings currently living on this earth depends.

Have you looked behind Door #1 and Door #2 and said: “Is that ALL there IS?” Then you are like me. I was looking for more. There just HAD to be MORE! So what IS behind Door #3? Rod Roberts?
What I’ve found is a man of principles and values. Someone who is comfortable in his own skin, who would exemplify the phrase – “Do The Right Thing.” It took some effort on my part to get to know Rod. Lots of reading articles, searching the internet, researching his voting record were just a part of it. I documented his background, looked at the people with whom he surrounds himself (as I always told my kids: “See your friends, see your future”). I talked to others in the 912ProjectDesMoines, S.O.A.R, Coalition for Common Sense, 912 Patriots For Action and Des Moines Tea Party in which I started to participate. I wanted to share my findings and to discuss what they knew about Rod. It was becoming apparent to me that I was becoming a citizen advocate for restoring liberty.
And now after going to many events to which Rod has spoken and answered many tough questions, I’ve listened, but also have gotten to talk with him one-on-one. I’ve asked him my tough questions, and shared those moments of laughter and current topics over a meal. So here it is – Rod is THE REAL DEAL! He gets “it”.
The example of his life, his commitment to faith and service is real. His life long journey is also a civics lesson for us all. He not only understands the Constitution, but also the importance of the Declaration. One without the other, we lose the true intentions of our Founding Fathers. What I’ve come to appreciate most (that light bulb moment for me) was when he talks with you, it’s not about him, but about “WeThePeople.” Rod is not some figurehead of a governor. He is us, you and me, WeThePeople. He is not some powerful being, or egotistical guy who lives in Terrace Hill and works as the high and mighty chief executive at the State Capitol. HIS trust is in YOU – the people. It’s the People’s House. He gets it. He listens. As a legislator, he knows what needs to be done; he knows how bad it is. His ideas are exact, and speak from his experience, and are bold in his convictions. I don’t think that Rod will soon forget that night in February 2009, when the people were thrown out of The People’s House! Rod understands his moment in time and the difficult tasks before him.
All of us can read the comparison charts of the position each candidate takes on issues. We can hear their stump speeches of commonality. But the arguable contested differences have led to attacks with some extremely vitriol and unbecoming moments. I AM DONE WITH THAT! So, here we are with the question of who do we believe? I was looking for, as it turned out, a Rod Roberts kind of guy. Rod will lead us out of this mess in our state government. He has a plan, a workable plan. He will not only lead us, but teach us how government should be run. As Ronald Reagan said, “Government is not the solution to our problems. Government is the problem.” He will show us, in an honorable and enthusiastic way, the road that brings Iowans back together on a right course.
So, to answer that original question about Door #1 or Door#2, join me and choose Door#3! That Door is Rod’s door in the capitol building and it will always BELONG to WeThePeople and will always be OPEN to WeThePeople! Let’s get started on June 8th by voting for Rod Roberts as our next Governor.

With DoJ threatening prosecution, Obama slams BP for 'lawyering up'
On his trip to the Gulf today, President Obama criticized BP for spending millions of dollars on a new public relations campaign addressing the Gulf oil crisis, and also for planning to pay $10 billion in dividends to investors. "They've got a moral and legal obligation to the Gulf," Obama said, according to a White House pool report. The president added he doesn't want BP "nickel and diming the folks down here."
Then Obama addressed the question of damages and other financial claims against BP. According to the pool report, BP and Coast Guard officials whose job it is to handle claims "are stationed with each parish president in Louisiana, and [Obama] wants the same arrangement for county governments in all the affected states."
At that point, the pool report says Obama "lit into BP" because he wants to - Obama's words - "make sure that BP is not lawyering up essentially."
Just two days ago, Attorney General Eric Holder traveled to Louisiana to announce that the Justice Department has begun criminal and civil investigations into the oil spill.
As a result of that investigation, BP and other companies could be charged with violating a variety of environmental laws, as well as other crimes. Holder pledged to prosecute any offenders "to the fullest extent of the law."
The prosecution could result in enormous penalties and losses for BP beyond what has already occurred because of the spill. And now the president himself goes after BP for "lawyering up."
The company certainly has huge obligations as a result of its actions in this matter.
But surely the constitutional-law-professor-in-chief would concede their right to a legal defense. If you were facing a full-scale federal investigation in which the attorney general personally pledged to punish you "to the fullest extent of the law," you might well consider lawyering up.

EDMOND - State lawmakers say it's a pre-emptive strike against Sharia law, needed to prevent here what has happened in the United Kingdom.
State Question 755, which likely will be on the ballot in November, would make in-state courts rely on federal and state laws when deciding cases and forbid courts from using international law or Sharia law when making rulings.
The proposal, which has an Edmond connection, would amend Article 7, Section 1 of the Oklahoma Constitution, and stems from House Joint Resolution 1056, dubbed the "Save Our State" amendment, passed during the just-finished legislative session.
State Rep. Lewis Moore, R-Edmond, a co-author of HJR 1056, said he wanted to express his support very early for the legislation, which is needed because of the "onslaught" coming Oklahoma's way.
"I don't think we should accept or encourage Sharia law in any way, shape or form," Moore said.
State Rep. Rex Duncan, R-Sand Springs, primary author of HJR 1056, said Oklahoma is the first state to pass such legislation and he hopes other states will follow.
Duncan, an attorney who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, said the amendment is needed because judges in other states and on the federal bench have increasingly cited international law in their decisions. He said he feels that action is inappropriate in a sovereign state.
Duncan said Sharia law is entrenched in the United Kingdom.
"It is a cancer upon the survivability of the UK," Duncan said. "SQ 755 will constitute a pre-emptive strike against Sharia law coming to Oklahoma."
State Sen. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, a co-author of HJR 1056, said American courts are being more frequently challenged that international law should trump U.S. law.
"Sharia law coming to the U.S. is a scary concept," Sykes said. "Hopefully the passage of this constitutional amendment will prevent it in Oklahoma."
The legislation behind SQ 755 was inspired by the realization, through media observation, that Islam is spreading into America at an alarming rate, and that activist judges are beginning to give credence to "international law," Duncan said.
Duncan said reaction to the proposal has been entirely positive, and he believes as Oklahomans become aware of the measure they will support it overwhelmingly.

DeMint On The Senate's 'Secret Bills' week ago, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) posted a video on his YouTube account that shows his floor speech in which he voices his concern with secret bills and the fact that the Senate passes over 90% of legislation without any debate, without amendment, and without a roll call vote

But I think it is important that America know what we're talking about here. At this point in the Senate 94 percent of all the bills are passed unanimous consent. 94 percent. So this is hardly a lack of productivity, and what this means is that 94 percent of the bills that pass the Senate have no debate, no vote, no amendments, no reading of the bill, no online disclosure, and very often, no score from the Congressional Budget Office.
"When I first took over the Steering Committee, one of the things I learned real quickly, is that whenever we're having a break, if we're going for a week like we're going this week, on my way to the airport, I would get a call from staff telling me there were dozens of request to pass bills unanimous consent, cause they knew we were all going out of town. And a lot of them had some pretty big price tags on them.

"Folks, you don't get $13 Trillion in debt when you're doing things right. And part of the problem is that 94 percent of the bills that pass the Senate, pass in secret. The problem is not secret holds, it's the secret passing of bills, when very often we don't even know who's requesting bills. And if we didn't have staff available at night when they run their so-called hotlines, which means the phone in your office rings, they ask if you will agree to pass a bill, you haven't read it, you don't know what it costs, but if you don't agree to pass it by unanimous consent, you are holding the bill.

"If you ask to read it for the next day or two, it's very likely that some association is getting e-mails from either the Republican or the Democrat side that Senator DeMint is holding this desperately needed piece of legislation, who nobody else is read. I'd be glad to work with my colleagues on dealing with this issue if they believe secret holds are a problem, but I frankly think passing 94 percent of the bills without anybody even reading them or knowing they're getting passed is not a good way to do business."
This is a rather jaw-dropping revelation that calls for at least three questions.
First, who is writing these bills?
The American people know that our legislators aren't the ones who actually write the bills, because they've already conceded they don't read the bills, after all, according to Congressman JohnConyersFPRIVATE "TYPE=PICT;ALT=http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif" (D-MI), there's no point in doing so because "you don't have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you've read the bill". The actual writers of these bills are never accounted for, thus, not only do we have secret bills, we have secret writers writing the secret bills.
Second, if our legislators aren't writing the bills, nor are they reading the bills, then what job is it that We the People, have hired them to do?
At this rate, we might as well go with trained chimps and/or drinking bird toys, could they do any worse?
Third, how can one support a bill that they know nothing about because they've had no hand in its construction or its review, and then honestly tell their constituents that they are being effectively served?
This amount of incompetence can't possibly be accidentally, and this unconscionable behavior can be tolerated no longer.
At this point, it's questionable that "vote the bastards out" is the best solution to cure what ails this nation.
The political system has been completely corrupted at all levels of government, and unfortunately we have too many elected officials who are more willing to go along and play the game rather than reform it, and to make matters worse, the so-called reformers, i.e. Obama, only pose as such to garner support, and then just add more dung to the pile.
How can we expect better when we keep sending politicians, who may initially be honest and forthright with their aims to dutifully serve their constituents, to the metastasized cancer of greed, deceit, and corruption that Washington has become?
At least we can thank Senator DeMint for bringing this practice of secret bills to our attention, he is one of the few who has avoided the sickness and is trying to serve us the way our Founders intended, unfortunately he is just that; one of the few.

In what has to be one of the biggest violations of common sense and burden of proof in motoring news this year, the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that officers can "visually estimate" how fast a person is driving. and give them a ticket for it.

Supreme Court Justice Maureen O'Connor said "Rational triers of fact could find a police officer's testimony regarding his unaided visual estimation of a vehicle's speed, when supported by evidence that the officer is trained, certified by (the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy) or a similar organization, and experienced in making such estimations, sufficient to establish beyond a reasonable doubt the defendant's speed.
Independent verification of the vehicle's speed is not necessary to support a conviction for speeding."
Hey "Supreme Court Justices" why don't you guys get this part of what laws are supposed to do through your thick skulls. It's safe to say that officers might be trained to identify speeds, and they might even be great at it - but it blasts the notion of burden of proof being on the state out of the water.

Warren Buffet /Hathaway Berkshire increased their holdings in NALCO just last November. (Timing is everything).
The dispersement chemical is known as Corexit. What it does is hold the oil below the water's surface. It is supposed to break up the spill into smaller pools. It is toxic and banned in Europe.
NALCO says they are using older and newer versions of Corexit in the Gulf.. (Why would you need a newer version, if the old one was fine?)
There is big money and even bigger players in this scam. While they are letting the oil blow wide open into the Gulf, the stakes and profit rise.

It has been confirmed that the dispersal agent being used by BP and the government is Corexit 9500 , a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by Nalco Holding Company of Naperville, IL. Their stock took a sharp jump, up more than 18% at its highest point of the day today, after it was announced that their product is the one being used in the Gulf. Nalco's CEO, Erik Frywald, expressed their commitment to "helping the people and environment of the Gulf Coast recover as rapidly as possible." It may be that the best way to help would be to remove their product from the fray. Take a look at some of the facts about Corexit 9500:
A report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. entitled "Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview " states that "Corexit 9500, Corexit 9527, and Corexit 9580 have moderate toxicity to early life stages of fish, crustaceans and mollusks (LC50 or EC50 - 1.6 to 100 ppm*). It goes on to say that decreasing water temperatures in lab tests showed decreased toxicity, a lowered uptake of the dispersant. Unfortunately, we're going to be seeing an increase in temperatures, not a decrease. ComEd names 2 new outside directors
(Crain's) - Commonwealth Edison Co. has appointed two new outside board members as the utility continues to seek to distance itself from parent Exelon Corp. in the ongoing controversy in Springfield over future electric rates.
Added to the ComEd board are Edward (Ted) J. Mooney, former CEO of Nalco Holding Co. in Naperville, and Jesse H. Ruiz, partner in the law firm of Gardner Carton & Douglas LLP and chairman of Illinois State Board of Education. The appointments were effective Oct. 16.

Science magazine features Mines hydrates research
GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 12, 2009 - Science magazine has published a paper by Colorado School of Mines doctoral graduate student Matthew Walsh, and faculty and co-directors of the Center for Hydrate Research (CHR), Carolyn Koh, E. Dendy Sloan, Amadeu Sum, and David Wu - "Microsecond Simulations of Spontaneous Methane Hydrate Nucleation and Growth."
The article was recently featured on "Science Express," the magazine's web site that highlights selected articles that will appear in upcoming print issues.
Wu explains gas hydrates as vast untapped energy reserves found in the ocean and the permafrost that are also a potential storage medium for hydrogen fuel or sequestering carbon dioxide. Hydrates currently pose the greatest challenge in the delivery of oil and gas in pipelines, which can be plugged by the formation of hydrates, he said. The Mines research reported in Science helps explain how hydrates form, and could eventually lead to ways to control their growth.
"Methane hydrates form at high pressures and low temperatures, and have an unusual crystalline structure in which water molecules form cages around individual methane molecules, " Wu said. "How such complex structures form is notoriously difficult to study since the process of nucleation is a rare random event that happens in a few nanoseconds and at a random location over a few nanometers."
This study was supported by the National Science Foundation-Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and CBET Division, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Mines Hydrate Consortium, which is presently sponsored by BP, Champion Technologies, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Multi-Chem Group, Nalco, Petrobras, Schlumberger, Shell, SPT Group, StatoilHydro, and Total.

Hizb ut-Tahrir America Announces Annual Conference - Madeleine Gruen
Hizb ut-Tahrir America (HTA) released a video announcement for its 2010 "Khilafah Conference," to be held on July 11 at the Chicago Marriott, Oak Brook.
The conference is titled, "Emerging World Order: How the Khilafah Will Shape the World."
Last year, HTA announced its presence in the United States by hosting a conference at the Hilton in Oak Lawn, Illinois. The conference drew approximately 500 supporters, but did not appear to generate lasting momentum for HTA beyond the flurry of press reporting surrounding the event.
Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) has a presence in more than 45 countries around the world and seeks to establish an Islamic state.
Once its government has been established, HT intends to spread Islam to the rest of the world.
